✌️ Ebike Boom II

Ebike sales soar alongside gas prices, Super73 unveils cool new motorcycle, and Apple Car team dissolves.

What You Need to Know This Week

  • According to AAA, escalating gas prices are “without a doubt” changing commuter behavior. Perhaps as a result, it appears the pandemic-era ebike boom is getting a second wind. “At Dutch e-bike maker VanMoof, sales over the past few weeks have been twice as high as the company’s projections.”

  • Both Ireland and New Zealand are slashing public transport fares to ease cost-of-living pressures.

  • Meanwhile America’s answer to the oil crisis may be to create a gas tax holiday. Apart from being a bad move for the environment, suspending the gas tax wouldn’t even put much of a dent in fuel prices.

  • Sadly, gas-guzzlers don’t just hurt people at the pump. New research shows SUVs and light trucks are 4x more likely than other cars to hit pedestrians when turning.

  • With oil supplies squeezed, Germany backs a plan to phase out sales of ICE cars by 2035.

  • The UN says people should bike more to fight climate change.

  • England may start to pull funding from major roads if they increase carbon emissions or don’t promote active travel.

  • A New York City clean-air program allows citizens to report idling trucks in exchange for a cut of the fines. One vigilante made $64k recording videos of violators last year.

  • The Apple Car team has been dissolved but apparently the vehicle is still expected by 2025.

  • The legacy of Covid open streets continues, with several cities in Israel announcing plans to shut down major thoroughfares to motor traffic.

  • How an Oregon ebiker jerry-rigged an EV charging station to charge their two-wheeler.

  • Super73 announced its first electric motorcycle alongside other new additions to its ebike lineup.

  • After 48 years at the helm, Specialized founder Mike Sinyard is stepping down and appointing former Dyson executive Scott Maguire as the new CEO.

  • Gogoro announced its new SSmartcore technology platform, which will result in smarter electric two-wheelers. “That means more memory, longer-distance remote monitoring, and I/O control.”

  • According to a new study from Zurich, car owners who also own an ebike used the ebike to replace about half the miles they usually traveled by car.

  • Rather than boosting EVs, the IEA’s plan to cut oil demand hinges mostly on restricting car usage and encouraging micromobility and public transport.

  • Tembici, a LATAM bikeshare startup, saw its revenue jump 40% in 2021 YoY after it diversified its revenue streams to include delivery rentals, commuter rides, and advertising sponsorships.

  • The Biden administration has allocated 99% of the $30 billion for transit in the American Rescue Plan.

  • Next, what if the Biden administration simply paid people not to drive?
