Chinese imports currently account for up to 97% of bikes purchased in the United States. Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer wants to change that dynamic with a new bill aimed at rejuvenating domestic production. The proposed law would suspend tariffs on components like brakes and electric motors for 10 years to incentivize domestic assembly, create a transferrable e-bike production tax credit for bikes manufactured in the U.S., and provide low-interest loans for e-bike manufacturers to purchase equipment.
