What You Need to Know This Week

  • Tier, a Berlin-based micromobility provider, announced plans to buy rival Spin from Ford, setting the stage for a massive North American expansion. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but late last year, Tier raised $200M for M&A. The acquisition will grow Tier’s global footprint to 520 cities and communities across 21 countries, making the German company the largest shared operator in the world. Ford, which purchased Spin for $100M in 2018 and is the only US automaker with a significant micromobility business, will maintain a strategic investment in the company.

  • Taipei-based battery and EV moped company Gogoro has unveiled the world’s first solid state swappable battery. The advantage of solid state battery packs is that, in addition to being far less likely to catch fire, they offer significantly higher capacity and range.

  • Study after study shows that pedestrian-friendly cities have lower rates of diabetes and obesity.

  • Yamaha plans to bring three ebikes to the market by the end of 2022, marking the first time the Japanese manufacturer will produce its own line of ebikes.

  • GoTo Global, an EMEA shared mobility company, has raised $5M in strategic investment as it prepares to go public.

  • Sales volumes keep rising for Chinese electric moped maker Niu, even as its stock price drops.
